In the year 2014, disappearance of two aircrafts, MH370 and MH17, was disastrous in commercial aviation history. The high profile missing of these two airplanes has raised questions about the safety of air-travel and people are getting afraid of air traveling.

Apart from these two events, experts declared the year 2014 safer than ever with the least number of deadly accidents compared with the number of flights, in the air travel history.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) statistics confirmed the above mentioned theory. Tony Tyler, director general and chief executive officer of IATA said “While aviation safety was in the headlines in 2014, the data shows that flying continues to improve its safety performance.”

It is presented in the annual safety report of IATA that there were 12 lethal accidents in the year 2014 with 641 casualties, proportionate to 19 deadly accidents and 517 casualties per year in the five-year period between 2009 and 2013.  The loss of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 is not included in this report which claimed 298 lives as it was considered as a war crime rather than an accident.

It is reported that 3.2 billion travelers flew by air in 2014. Comparing the numbers of plane crash and casualties with large number of people flying, indicates that we are living in “a golden era of aircraft safety” RELATIVELY.

Aviation analysts also declared the preceding year as the safest year ever, with one fatal accident per 2.38 million flights, excluding the exception of MH17.

The decision of expanding Gatwick or Heathrow is still PENDING. So the cold war is still on. It has recently been exposed that the residents of Crawley were in favor of new runway to be built but the councilors dismissed the findings of a separate polls carried out by 2 different sources; Crawley News and YouGov. Aside from the feasibility of the expansion, the opinion of the people of Crawley matters the most or at least should have been voiced.

“Last week a Crawley News survey of 1,000 people from the town revealed that more people in every single neighborhood in Crawley backed a second runway than were opposed to the idea.”

“Overall 49.3 per cent were in favor, 23.2 per cent were opposed and 27.5 per cent were undecided.”

“Two separate YouGov polls, commissioned by Gatwick Airport Limited in September and November, found that 54 and 55 per cent of Crawley residents respectively were in favor of a second runway at Gatwick rather than Heathrow when asked.”

“The polls found that 37 per cent of those asked in September supported Heathrow expansion, while the figure fell to 33 per cent in November.”

“Nine per cent were undecided in September and in November 12 per cent had not made up their mind.”

These numbers generously suggest that Gatwick should be the chosen one. It isn’t entirely dependent on people’s opinion but this doesn’t rectifies it been falsified by the councilors.

There has been a lot of recent activity at the UK airports. It mainly concerns with Air Passenger Duty (APD). A draft legislation granting the Scottish Government powers to levy Air Passenger Duty (APD) was published. This publication rallied a great concentration. In response to this proposed legislation, the Chief Executive of the Airport Operators Association, Darren Caplan, representing 55 airport of UK said:

“Given the long-stated ambition of the Scottish Government to reduce APD by 50% in the short-term, to be followed by eventual abolition, the Smith Commission’s proposals have far-reaching consequences for airports across the UK. It is of course a matter for the Scottish Government to decide whether to reduce APD for passengers travelling out of their respective airports, once they are granted the necessary powers, and they should be commended for taking the view that they will ultimately be better off without this damaging tax. However, in the interests of fairness it cannot be right that one part of the UK is able to levy a substantially reduced rate of APD compared to other areas, thus disadvantaging not only our airport members but companies and travelers too.”

APD has been crippling the ability of People to travel, mainly out of UK. It simply costs too much. Family vacation has become a distant dream for budget travelers. Darren Caplan also said, “We continue to take the view that a cut anywhere should be matched, immediately, by a cut everywhere. We respectively call upon the main UK political parties to work together to publish a plan, before the general election, setting out how this will be delivered.”
